EcoSusNet, NACABS Polytechnic Launch Campus Climate Action Drive in Akwanga

On April 8, 2025, Ecosystem Sustainability Network (EcoSusNet) partnered with NACABS Polytechnic, Akwanga, Nasarawa State, to champion climate action and environmental awareness through a tree planting and sensitisation event held on campus.
The event, which formed part of the institution’s pre-matriculation activities, brought together students, faculty, and invited guests in a collective call for climate action.
This collaboration emerged as a follow-up to EcoSusNet’s earlier engagement during the #ClimateActionforStrongerNaija project, where a community dialogue in Akwanga inspired several institutions, including NACABS Polytechnic, to encourage students to participate in more environmental activities, such as tree planting, when celebrating, graduating, or matriculating.
Inspired by the dialogue, NACABS Polytechnic initiated plans for a campus-wide environmental programme, integrating climate education and tree planting into student activities such as matriculation and graduation.

Speaking at the event, EcoSusNet commended the institution’s leadership for taking a proactive stance on sustainability. The organisation reiterated the importance of involving young people in practical climate solutions, especially within educational environments where long-term behavioural change can be cultivated.
As part of the celebration, students participated in a tree-planting exercise across the Polytechnic campus, reinforcing the message of restoration, responsibility, and resilience in the face of climate change. The school also announced plans to plant at least 1,000 trees over time as part of its greening initiative.
Deputy Rector (Administration), Mr. Agbutun David Abuluya Esq, expressed appreciation to EcoSusNet for its ongoing support, noting that the presence of the organisation added credibility and momentum to the initiative. He emphasised the Polytechnic’s commitment to sustaining the effort, including the integration of environmental action into its broader academic culture.
EcoSusNet reaffirmed its dedication to supporting youth-led institutions and grassroots partners in promoting environmental sustainability. The organisation called for increased collaboration among government, civil society, and educational institutions to scale up climate adaptation and awareness efforts nationwide.
The event concluded with renewed commitments from both partners to deepen collaboration and empower students to be climate advocates within and beyond their communities.
EcoSusNet remains committed to supporting educational institutions and youth-led efforts that promote climate awareness and tangible environmental action across Nigeria.
Together, we are growing climate-conscious communities—one tree at a time.
